Lead Engineer
At ZeroNorth, we are at the forefront of transforming the shipping industry through digital innovation. Our solutions go beyond optimising business operations, they are designed to lead the industry in sustainability by significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
Our core mission of making global trade greener drives everything we do. Your contributions will play a crucial role in reducing emissions, aligning commercial success with sustainability, and delivering benefits for both profitability and the environment.
ZeroNorth is powered by a diverse team of 550+ professionals with more than 38 nationalities, operating out of global hubs including Copenhagen (our headquarters), Athens, Chennai, Mumbai, Singapore, Sofia, and Tokyo.
We are leading the industry's green transition, enabling our partners to leverage data for actionable decarbonisation efforts.
Lead Engineer at ZeroNorth
We are hiring a Lead Software Engineer for our Fuel team in Copenhagen: a team of 7 building live enterprise applications that clients worldwide use to make fuel purchasing decisions. This is part technical lead, part people manager. You set the technical direction for the platform, and you are responsible for the engineers who build it.
You will stay hands-on. Most of your week is spent designing and building. The difference between this role and a senior IC role is twofold: you are accountable for the architecture and engineering standards of the platform, and you are accountable for the growth of the engineers in your team. You will work closely with our international product team, who set priorities together with you, and translate those priorities into delivery.
You will also help build the future of ZeroNorth. We are developing a new agentic platform that reimagines how our customers work with us, and every business unit is part of building it. The Fuel team is in that shift, and you and your engineers will help shape how it happens.
Key responsibilities:
Set technical direction. Own architecture decisions and high-level designs for the Fuel platform. Decide when to invest in technical debt and when to ship.
Build. Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs in C# and the .NET ecosystem, with full-stack work in Angular where needed.
Grow your people. Hold biweekly 1-1s, understand each engineer's career goals, and help them get there. You are accountable for developing the engineers in your team.
Deliver with product. Partner with product management to scope and break down work. Priorities are set together with product; you turn them into well-built software and are accountable for its technical quality.
Raise the bar. Set and enforce engineering standards through code reviews, testing practices, CI/CD, and observability. Make AI-driven development part of that standard, so the team ships faster without compromising on quality.
Your profile:
Technical leadership experience. You have led the technical direction of a team or major system: driving architecture decisions, setting standards, and being accountable for delivery.
People responsibility. Experience supporting engineers' growth, whether as a lead, mentor, or line manager. You are comfortable having career conversations and helping people develop.
6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping web applications. Familiarity with both microservice and monolith architectures.
Deep .NET proficiency. Strong C# and .NET (ideally .NET 6+), with solid experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
AI-assisted development. You use AI tools as part of your daily engineering work and have a view on where they help and where they don't.
DevOps experience. Comfortable with modern cloud infrastructure and CI/CD, containerisation (Docker), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform). Hands-on Kubernetes is a bonus, not a requirement: our Platform team has built abstractions and documentation on top of it, so engineers can run on the platform with minimal Kubernetes knowledge.
Quality mindset. Unit and integration testing as a habit, and a commitment to reliable software.
Communication. Excellent written and verbal English, and experience collaborating across time zones in an agile team.
A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
